ASSET INSPECTION QUALIFICATIONS

Introduction

Asset inspectors require years of training to have the knowledge and experience to become a qualified inspectors and perform inspections safely. Sadly though, there are some unqualified and unexperienced electrical personnel who undertake asset inspection. To inspect and assess correctly there are the minimum qualifications which are needed.  

Why Important?

Serviceable assets are of the utmost importance and correct asset management is essential for every owner. Just like having your car regularly serviced and inspected prevents problems, the same is true when it comes to the inspection and maintenance of utility assets. Not only is it an obligation, but also it protects the owner from loss and liability. Additionally, regular maintenance extends the life cycle and prevents premature replacement of the asset. That is why it is essential to have a qualified asset inspector whom has experience in the industry to carry out this specialised work.

What Training is Needed?

On the job experience in asset inspection is very important. A asset inspector will have one of the following qualifications:

  • UET20621 – Certificate II in ESI – Asset Inspection and Testing (released 2021 and not yet being delivered by RTO’s at the time of this article)
  • UET20619 – Certificate II in ESI – Asset Inspection
  • UET20612 – Certificate II in ESI – Asset Inspection
  • Energy Corporation of NSW – Pole Inspection and Maintenance

Additionally, to complete asset inspection for poles or structures above ground, the asset inspector should have the following qualifications and licences for drone inspection:

  • CASA – remotely piloted aircraft operator’s certificate (ReOC)
  • CASA – Remote pilot licence
  • AVI30419 – Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) – Optional

These qualifications ensure that the inspector is able to carry out the inspections legally and safely.
